Continued Turmoil: The Persistent Conflict in Ukraine

As of early November 2023, the situation in Ukraine remains deeply affected by Russian military actions. Two people were killed and the power supply disrupted due to Russian shelling in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy reported repelling a Russian assault near Vuhledar in Donetsk, with significant Russian losses. Conversely, Russia accused Ukraine of risking a nuclear disaster after shooting down drones near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, which Russia occupies.

Diplomatically, the United States has imposed new sanctions targeting entities aiding Russia’s military efforts. Meanwhile, Russia withdrew from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, aligning its policies with the U.S. but stating it will not resume testing unless the U.S. does. Ukraine has criticized companies like Nestle for continuing to operate in Russia, labeling them as “international sponsors of war”.

On the military aid front, the U.S. is set to announce a $425 million aid package for Ukraine, which includes laser-guided munitions to counter drones.
